WHILE COMFORT IS NOT ALWAYS IN OUR REACH, IT MOST CERTAINLY CAN BE

WHILE COMFORT IS NOT ALWAYS IN OUR REACH, IT MOST CERTAINLY CAN BE

There have been a great many times that I have been at a wonderful shooting location, with unlimited subjects, beautiful weather and and abundance of great shooting situations awaiting me.

While all of the factors are available in some form to all of us at one time or another, I have, at times turned my day or part of my day into pain and discomfort, just by kneeling down on the ground, kneeling down on WET ground, sitting on a hard surface, laying on the ground on my shoulder or on my elbows, and either being uncomfortably wet, or painfully denting my body with rocks, gravel, glass or whatever may be underneath me.

One day, years ago while going through all of the above, I noticed that my wife, Ramona, wasn't having all of the bad experiences I was having and that was because she had grabbed a rubber pad that she normally used for gardening and brought it with her on this shoot.  It was strange that I had never noticed this before, but it suddenly dawned on me that she was always comfortable when she shot pictures.  Then something else dawned on me.  I was never one to volunteer to do the gardneing and therefore never knew there was a rubber pad that she leaned on when pulling weeds, etc.  Ah ha!  So I began my quest for the perfect pad because my pad had to be better than her pad.

I spent more than too much money for some heavy industrial pads, but of course they were too big, so I wound up not carrying them with me.  Sort of like a tripod and head, that weighs too much so it stays in the car or house.

But, the quest continued.  Then a close friend of mine, Sandy, showed me what she was using.  It was a fold up rubber pad that had its own case and a hook to carry it on your camera bag.  Another ah ha!  So I bought a few of these.  While it was a great concept and still is, it was unfortunately to small for me to comfortably lean on it in most ways.  The quest continued.

Enter Steve Uzzell.  Steve is a very close friend, and one of the most incredible photographers I have ever met as well as a world wide lecturer.  Steve kept showing me his pad or pads and they were, guess what, just the right size, packed and carried easily, water proof and dense enough to be almost like a mattress to sleep on.  Actually, while leaving him nameless I know a photographer who has carried several in his truck, so that he can not only take a nap on them but also use them for laying out equipment when in a less than clean or dry shooting location.  Whala!

So what is this incredible pad you should never leave home without?  It is SMITH AND HAWKEN'

Enjoy your photography more.  Get the shot you set out to get.  Lean on a Smith and Hawkens.

THREE DAYS OF MACRO IN THE SHENANDOAH AREA-JUNE 12,13,14, 2009

Macro, close-up and tabletop photography have always been some of my favorite forms of photography, and has provided me with exciting opportunities, and creative freedom more than any other type of photography.

From the smallest subjects to smallest parts of some of the biggest subjects, you will be able to put your own twist, your photographic perspective to work to create images that are unique because they are how you perceived them.  Welcome to the world of close-up photography.

The workshop will begin on Friday afternoon at approximately noon at which time we shall all meet each other, and go over what we shall accomplish over the next few days.  Our meeting place will be Old Rag Gallery in Sperryville, Va. at the base of the Shenandoah Mountains.

At this orientation, we shall go over macro equipment, basic photography concepts, which for some will simply be revisiting things you know.  A refresher never hurts.  We shall go over light modifiers and how we shall be using them, and strobe for enhancing the available light around us.  At the same time we shall go over light and learn how to use the color, direction and quality of light we have INCLUDING INFRARED.  We shall discuss white balance and the effects that it can have under normal shooting, and special creative shooting.

On Saturday morning at about 5:30 am we shall make our way into Shenandoah and begin our creative journey.  There will be a large variety of subjects to work with, especially right after sunrise.   From the waking flowers, to the tall grasses, to insects still wet from the morning dew.  There will be an unlimited amount of subjects to work with.

Later in the day we shall make our way back to Sperryville and shall stop for breakfast and then move on to some private locations for more photographic work in some more challenging lighting situations and a different type of subject than we shot early in the morning.  Remember we shall be doing Macro and Close-up work.

After we are done with that shoot we shall make our way back to our base of operation, where we shall take some images from each student and set them up for an afternoon critique.  If you have a portable computer, then it would be good if you have it with you.  Jump drives and CD’s are also helpful.  You will be able to get lunch at one of several restaurants within walking distance, and bring it back to the gallery.

After critiquing the images, we shall gather our gear and head out for more shooting at some new locations.

Did I mention to make sure you have plenty of memory cards with you?

LET'S GET READY FOR OUR SPRING AND SUMMER PHOTOGRAPHY ADVENTURES

Every wonderful season has its own shooting requirement for being comfortable.  When you are comfortable you can concentrate on creating beautiful images.  Spring arrived today, as I was typing this article and summer is not far behind.  With Spring and Summer, come those pesky insects, especially little blood sucking creatures like ticks.  I hate them.  They will be everywhere that landscape, wildlife and macro photographers like to take their pictures.  So it is important that you take the proper steps to keep both ticks and mosquitios off your bodies.

While insect repellents, such as those containing deet are effective they are not 100 percent protective.  There are sprays for clothing i.e. Sawyer Premium Insect repellent for clothing.  But many of these come with alot of precautions.  A good source for repellents is REI, HUDSON TRAILS, and others who specialize in outdoor activities.  Check them out and read the boxes.  In general it is hard to keep ticks off you.  You can bury yourselves in clothing but generally if they want in they are getting in.   Keep a check on your body.  It takes hours for ticks to create serious issues, so check out your head, and every other part.  Hair especially.  I came back from a shoot last year, and even after a hot shower, scrubing and shampooing, I still found a little son of a gun on my scalp an hour later.  I did not use repellent that day and I am not sure it would have made a difference.

Clothing:

Have a light weight, water proof jacket that rolls up neatly so it can be in your camera bag or back pack.

Wear a gortex shoe or boot and socks the wisk moisture away from your feet.

It is good to wear a hat or other kind of head covering to protect against ticks and to keep persperation out of your eyes

Light weight, light colored, loose fitting clothes will provide comfort.  If you cannot bend down in your pants you can't get those low to the ground creative images.

WATER - SPORTS DRINKS, ENERGY BARS should be considered an essential part of your travel kit.  It does not matter if you are in the country or in the city.

IN CAMERA / IN LENS-IMAGE STABILZATION SYSTEMS ARE GREAT BUT NOTHING EQUALS A GOOD TRIPOD AND TRIPOD HEAD

THE BEST STABILIZED LENSES AND CAMERAS NEED A LITTLE HELP
WHY ARE STRONG TRIPODS AND STRONG TRIPOD HEADS IMPORTANT

Let's get right to the point about tripods and tripod heads. They are by far, the best way to stabilize both your cameras and lenses. There is no better way.

Yes, yes, yes! Stabilization in the lenses and stabilization in the camera bodies most certainly work and work great. The problem is they simply don’t work under all conditions or the same way with every photographer.

When shooting conditions require the photographer to shoot at slow shutter speeds, the stabilization systems certainly kick in and allow anywhere from 2 to 4 additional shutter speeds SLOWER to be used and will more than likely, but not necessarily prevent the image that would normally be blurred due to camera and lens movement, from becoming blurred. Whew……

So, how do you make a decision as to what the best tripod and tripod head are going to be for you and your photographic investments and for what you hope to accomplish in your artistic endeavors.

First and always, your budget will certainly come into play. But that should not be the only deciding factor. Inexpensive tripods and heads are inexpensive for a reason. They will more than likely not provide a very stable platform and could cause unexpected results in regards to sharpness and actual composition of your image.

You do have choices, and you have choices in price ranges that should provide you with decent to exceptional tripods and heads. The goal is to only have to buy this gear ONCE.

Two companies that provide a broad price range of both aluminum and carbon fiber tripods are Manfrotto and Induro. Manfrotto has been around for a very long time and Induro in their current form is a couple of years new, in their current form.

In the low to medium price range, Induro competes with Manfrotto, in both carbon fiber and aluminum, but comes in a bit under Manfrotto’s pricing. Both companies not only make tripod legs and monopods but also tripod heads.

In the high end we have Gitzo tripods, and Gitzo tripods have always been considered the ultimate in stable design and quality. They too make aluminum and carbon fiber. In this high price range Induro, has also entered the market to produce several tripods that now compete heavily with Gitzo but seem to be a touch heavier.  Again, their prices in the tripod category come under the Gitzo prices.

Aluminum tripods are heavier than Carbon Fiber tripods but Carbon Fiber transmits less vibration. For those reasons, Carbon Fiber Tripods cost more money, but in the long run are well worth the investment.

So in the tripod leg category you certainly have a very large selection, between these three brands. I would strongly recommend that these should be the brands you investigate. I would also make the point that while your personal budgets are very important, do not under estimate the need for a strong and solid platform that will enable you to get the sharpest images possible, with the expensive investment you have made in your camera gear.

On the low end plan to budget, just for the legs, anywhere from 140.00 to about 250.00. On the high end plan to budget 350.00 to 850.00.

Some will tell you that weight of your equipment should be the determining factor as to what will best fulfill your needs. That is not always the case, but certainly an important factor. I personally prefer heavier duty legs because I find them to be more stable in regards to vibration transmission as well as lateral movement.

At this time, the best bang for the buck on the high side is the Induro C413 OR 414 TRIPOD. They are not cheap, but they are carbon fiber, light weight, but not the lightest.

Look at all the different models, and if you have any questions please be sure to contact me, if you want some direction.  Just keep in mind that you should be buying based on what you think you may use in lenses, if not now, then in the future.  Even if you rent a long telephoto, high speed, heavy lens, you will want a tripod that can handle that kind of load.

Always try and support your local camera stores, who are more than likely stocking the brands of tripods mentioned in this article.

So, what tripods and heads do I use, and what do I recommend based on today’s new mix of products.

I have begun to use C414 Carbon fiber legs from Induro and they are some of the most stable tripod legs I have ever used but a bit heavy.  They have certainly gained spot in my heart.

My Gitzo tripods are of current models, are lighter in weight and without a doubt incredible, solid and vibration free platforms.

But tripods are again a matter of personal choice. These are in the 600.00 range and that’s enough to scare away a lot of people. However, while I use light weight bodies, I do have long lenses and for that reason alone I want very solid legs and ball heads.

I also use 3 different Gitzo tripods. They have always performed at a high level. I do not use the Manfrotto tripod legs because I prefer the Gitzo/Induro twist and pull legs as opposed to the Manfrotto click clamps. It is simply a matter of what is going to work more comfortably for you. To date however, Manfrotto does not produce a heavy duty tripod in the Gitzo or Induro class made of carbon fiber.

As for tripod heads, you need to look at the Acratech Light Weight Ball Heads. They are the lightest around, and can hold 25 pounds on any angle. Check out their web site. They are great for hikers. Really Right Stuff at the time of my writing is my favorite in the heavy duty ball heads. Keep in mind that these ball heads range from 300.00 to about 700.00. My current favorite is the Studio Ball, which is also the heaviest, but absolutely rock solid. What am I looking for in a good tripod head? The most solid platform that I can get, that when locked in place does not shift one little bit. I want good friction and pan controls that don't fight me when I need to get the shot. How much can a good ball head cost? $300.00 and up.  If you are into doing panoramas then you want to make sure the ball head has a smooth panning base, or has one available as an accessory.

Can you buy less expensive heads? Yes! Look into Gitzo, Manfrotto, and Induro heads. When budget is a factor, all three manufacturers will have a head that should fit your needs.

My quick release plates come from Wimberley.  They are called Arcaswiss mounting plates and are the most universal. They fit Acratech, Wimberley, Really Right Stuff and of course Arca Swiss heads.

Manfrotto, Induro and Gitzo have their own mounting systems although adapters can be purchased to use Arcaswiss type plates on their heads. Wimberley, Acratech and Really Right Stuff sell adapter clamps for most tripod heads.

Beyond these heads I also use a Wimberley Gimble Head which is designed for long lenses, allowing the best movements for follow through of wild life or sports subjects. Wimberley also sells the Sidekick, which can mount on a good ball head to produce some of the functions of a true Wimberley Gimble head.

If you stick with Induro, Gitzo or Manfrotto tripods or any of the above listed tripod heads, you will only be buying once. Anything less than their quality, will send you back to the retailer time and time again.

Below is a link to an independent review of the Induro type tripod I am currently using. It is not the lightest of my tripods but it does instill confidence.

YES I LOVE CAMERA BAGS, AND OH BOY DO I KEEP SEARCHING FOR INCREDIBLE CAMERA STRAPS - I HAVE FOUND ........... REALLY FOUND A GREAT STRAP

YES I LOVE CAMERA BAGS, AND OH BOY DO I KEEP SEARCHING FOR INCREDIBLE CAMERA STRAPS - I HAVE FOUND ........... REALLY FOUND A GREAT STRAP

I have written about straps before.  I fell in love with the Upstrap because it was extremely well made, and had a unique shoulder pad that just would not slip off from your shoulder.  But there were times when I needed to have that strap around my neck, and that was where the Upstrap was difficult to use.  Because of the pad, which in reality was never designed to worn on ones neck, it was very uncomfortable, especially in warmer weather when the pad rested directly on the back of ones neck.  It really hurt.

Enter stage right.  The WAPITI STRAP.  I found it by accident while checking out some posts from sports photographers and I decided to try it.  Boy am I glad I did. This strap is not only the most comfortable I have ever put against my skin, but it has a great gripping surface which you can learn about at their web site CLICK HERE FOR THEIR WEB SITE.   I have learned that some leathers are smooth and slick and some like these straps, while ultra soft, holds on like they had a set of teeth.

These straps come in several configurations.  One configuration is a fully adjustable strap, that is beautifully made and another is a strap cut to what ever custom length you want.  What more can you ask for?

Check out these straps.  You won't be disappointed.

Most of our instructors are now using this comfortable and secure strap.  It really has proven itself and is highly recommended.  Contact the manufacture direct at the link above.  Tell them that Blue Ridge Workshops recommended their strap.
